300 workers just staged the first-ever Teamsters strike at a cannabis grow house

More than 300 members of Teamsters Local 916 walked off the job at Ascend Wellness's cultivation facility in Barry, a small Pike County community, starting at 2 a.m. on June 25. The union says it's the first strike Teamsters have ever staged at a cannabis grow house, as opposed to a retail dispensary floor.

The union's complaint is a standard unfair-labor-practice list with one serious add-on: alongside accusations that Ascend is refusing to bargain in good faith over wages, health care, and overtime, Teamsters allege the company illegally fired a member of its own bargaining committee in retaliation. That kind of allegation is what turns a contract dispute into a formal ULP strike instead of a plain walkout.

The location matters as much as the headline count. This isn't a single storefront — it's a cultivation site that supplies dispensaries across Illinois, including the greater Chicago market, which is why labor groups and trade press are both flagging real supply-chain risk if the strike drags on. Grow-house labor rarely gets the same attention as retail-floor stories, largely because it's invisible to the consumer standing at the counter.

Zoom out and this fits a pattern that's been building all year: unionization drives concentrate where margins are tightest, and cultivation — the most capital-intensive, least glamorous link in the supply chain — is exactly where operators have been squeezing hardest. If this really is the first grow-house strike in the industry, it almost certainly won't be the last.
