THC, short for delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, is the compound most responsible for cannabis's psychoactive effects — the euphoria, altered perception, and relaxation people associate with getting high. It was first isolated and synthesized in 1964 by Israeli chemist Raphael Mechoulam, whose lab went on to identify much of the endocannabinoid system that explains how it works. THC is one of well over 100 cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, but it's the one present in the largest concentration in most modern flower, and the one every legal market tests and labels first.
THC works by binding to CB1 receptors, which are concentrated in the brain and central nervous system as part of the body's own endocannabinoid system — a signaling network that normally responds to compounds your body produces internally, not to the plant. When THC occupies those receptors, it alters neurotransmitter release in ways that can affect mood, memory, appetite, pain perception, and motor coordination. That's also why effects vary so much person to person: receptor density and sensitivity differ, and so does prior exposure and tolerance.
Here's the part that surprises a lot of people: raw cannabis straight off the plant won't get you high. Fresh flower is dominated by THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid), a non-intoxicating precursor. THCA only converts to THC when it's heated — smoking, vaping, or baking into an infused product all apply enough heat to drive that conversion, called decarboxylation. It's why a lab test on raw flower reports THCA and THC as separate line items, and why recipes for cooking with cannabis usually start with a "decarb" step in the oven before the plant material goes into butter or oil.
The percentage printed on a jar or vape cart label is a measure of THC (and THCA) content by dry weight — grams of THC per 100 grams of product, roughly — not a direct measure of how strong the high will feel. Two products at the same percentage can hit differently depending on their terpene and minor-cannabinoid profile (often called the entourage effect), your own tolerance, and how you consume it: a dab of 80% THC concentrate delivers the compound almost instantly and in a much larger single dose than a puff of 20% THC flower, even though the percentage gap looks bigger than the practical gap in some cases.
