Market Shift

Vape Just Overtook Flower in California. Nowhere Else Has.

For the week of June 26–July 3, vape edged past flower as California's best-selling category — a first among the six states Crushed tracks. Everywhere else, flower still wins, and in Michigan it isn't close.

vape 31.48% vs flower 30.97%, week of Jun 26–Jul 3

For the week of June 26–July 3, California's best-selling category by estimated sales was vape — 31.48% of the market, worth roughly $10.92M — just ahead of flower at 30.97% and about $10.75M. It's a gap of well under a percentage point, but among the six states Crushed's weekly rankings track, it's the first time vape has led at all.

Nowhere else is close. Michigan is the mirror image of California: flower runs 66.43% of the market there against just 11.95% for vape — the most flower-dominant of the six states by a wide margin. Illinois (flower 41.6% vs vape 28.25%), Massachusetts (45.19% vs 21.19%), Colorado (53.97% vs 21.44%), and Arizona (29.85% vs 21.85%) all still have flower comfortably in front.

The gap tracks with market maturity and price. California has the country's most developed vape hardware and pod ecosystem and, per Crushed's price tracking, some of the most competitively priced flower of the six states — so the categories are closer to parity on price-per-session than in a state like Michigan, where oversupplied flower sells for a median of $28 and simply out-competes vape on price.

Whether California's flip holds is the thing to watch. One week isn't a trend, and the two categories are close enough that next week's rankings could easily flip back. But if vape holds the lead through July, California — historically the bellwether for where the rest of the country's cannabis market ends up — will be the first of Crushed's tracked states to make the switch permanent.
